I strongly recommend using a sunblock that contains Zinc Oxide. The challenge with Zinc Oxide is that it is very thick and white and not appealing for daily use. There are many products that offer a micronized Zinc, however on dark skin it still leaves a white cast on the skin. Skin Ceuticals created a sunblock that contains a transparent Titanium Dioxide and Zinc Oxide. The Sheer Physical UV Defense is more like a liquid than a cream, this sunblock is so sheer that it will not show even on dark skin.
Sheer Physical UV Defense SPF 50®
A groundbreaking first-to-market mattifying fluid with transparent finish, this paraben-free, all-physical filter sunscreen provides increased protection in an ultra-sheer texture for all skin types, even very sensitive. Sheer Physical UV Defense SPF 50® offers the photoprotection of trusted broad-spectrum, physical filters, zinc oxide (Z-COTE®) and titanium dioxide, and is enhanced by artemia salina, a plankton extract, to increase the skin’s defenses and resistance to UV and heat stress.
The unique ‘shake then apply’ action assures even distribution of active ingredients in this silky sheer fluid that dries quickly and leaves no residue.

Rod Stewart and Stevie Nicks announced their joint ” Heart and Soul ” Tour. Tickets will be available for sale on January 26th, 2011. The rock icons have hinted at a duet, and that we can expect to hear some of their most popular hits including those from Fleetwood Mac. Rod Stewart made mention of “Maggie May,” during an interview on the Ellen show.
Rod Stewart / Stevie Nicks Heart and Soul Tour will be in Arizona, April 15th. The show will be at the US Airway Center.

I know that both Rod Stewart and Stevie Nicks have new albums, but I hope they include more than a few of their older hits. My choice set list would include: Maggie May, Forever Young, Downtown Train, Landslide, Dreams, Rhiannon, Sara and Stand Back.
My choice for possible duets: Stop draggin my heart around, Leather and Lace or Tonights the night.

Stevie Nicks will also be releasing her new album In Your Dreams, on May 3rd, 2011.

Look for Rod Stewart’s upcoming new album, The Best Of…The Great American Songbook.

What do you think would be a good duet for Rod Stewart and Stevie Nicks?
Do you have a favorite song that you think should make the set list?

Are you a good witch, or a bad witch? Perhaps, your not a witch at all. Whom ever you are, and wherever you find yourself on the yellow brick road of life, you can learn a thing or two from the ladies of Oz.

Be nice to others or someone may drop a house on you

Women will do anything for a great pair of shoes

Don’t forget the little people.

A journey is best measured in friends rather than miles

“Some people without brains do an awful lot of talking.”

Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned.

Play fair or you could end up living alone and talking to your flying monkeys.

Don’t be upset when you realize you can’t change a man. If he doesn’t have a heart, a brain or any courage – he never will.

You can spend all your time searching for the man to solve your problems, but in the end you will find you had the power all along.

There is no place like home!
It isn’t enough to just want to see your loved ones it’s that – if you ever go looking for your heart’s desire, don’t look any further than your own back yard. Because if it isn’t there, you never really lost it to begin with! Is that right?

I have wanted to see the Wicked Musical for over five years.” The Wizard of Oz” is one of my favorite movies and when I heard about Wicked, I rushed out and bought the book. Later when my husband and I were in New York, we planed to see the show but it was sold out. Then Wicked was in Phoenix, and it sold out again before we got tickets. Finally, we got tickets to see the musical in Tucson.
I really enjoyed the show, it was worth all my anticipation. If you are not familiar with Wicked, it is the untold story of the Witches of Oz. It gives you a look into the lives of the Witches before Dorothy ever melted or dropped a house on anyone. You may be surprised to learn that even the wicked can be good, and sometimes the good can be a little wicked. The story leaves you feeling empathetic toward Elphaba ( aka the Wicked Witch Of The West). The musical does differ from the book, but that is to be expected.

I would defiantly see this show again, however not at the same venue. We saw the show at the Centennial Hall in Tucson, and I was less than impressed with this venue. We could not see over the heads of the people in front of us, so we spent the entire show scrunched down and leaning to the side, it was very uncomfortable. The couple in front of us weren’t tall either, it’s just the way the seats are. Then during the 15 minute intermission, the line to the bathroom was out the door and all the way to the curb. I am not exaggerating, this was the longest bathroom line I have ever seen. Drinks and snacks were sold outside, and not at the same place. It would be impossible to get a drink, and a snack in that time frame, and forget about the bathroom. Keep in mind you have to be seated before the show starts or you are not allowed in for another 10 minutes. I could have perhaps over looked all this, if the staff was friendly, but they were less than friendly.

That Tragic Day
On the morning of January 8th, 2011, US Representative Gabriell Gifford was holding an open meeting in front of a Safeway grocery store near Tucson, Arizona. A shooter, 22 year old Jared Loughner, targeted Gifford, shooting her in the head, and then opened fire on the crowd. Laughner shot 19 people, 6 of the victims died. Laughner stopped shooting when he ran out of ammunition. When the shooter attempted to reload he was hit over the head with a chair and 74 year old Bill Badger tackled the shooter to the ground, even after he himself had been shot. The gunman was subdeud by Bill Badger, Roger Sulzgeber and Joseph Zamudio. The gunman attempted to reload at which point Patricia Maisch grabbed the magazine. Badger is a retired Army colonel and credits his military training for his quick response. Other heros include Daniel Hernandez who acted to slow the Gifford’s bleeding and Dorwan Stoddard who died trying to shield his wife from the gun shots.
Bad Guy – Good Guy? – The Other Person With A Gun
Before Joseph Zamudio helped hold down the gunman, he was inside Walgreens and heard the shots, he reacted quickly running outside. Zamudio was carring his firearm, as he left the store he clicked the safety off and had his hand on his gun that was concealed inside his jacket. When Zamudio arrived on the scene he saw Badger holding the gun, and initially thought he was the shooter. This brings up an important point, if you carry a firearm and you are on the scene of a shooting you need to think before you act. The person with the gun may not be the actual shooter, and you don’t want anyone, especially the police to mistake you as the shooter. This kind of mistake or “friendly fire” can happen in combat or during police action. First responders and those in the Military are trained to size up a scene upon before taking action. Unlike Badger, Zamudio did not have any military training. Zamudio admits he hasn’t had any formal weapon training, however he was raised around guns and is very comfortable with his firearm.
The Debate Continues
It’s one of the most debated subjects, to carry or not to carry. Many people like to express their Second-Amendment right to bear arms. There are also those that think that stricter gun laws are needed. Some people have this idea that gun owners want to run around like a vigilante, others simply believe it is their god given right to protect themselves and their family. People in favor of stricter gun laws feel that citizens don’t need a weapon for self defence because we have police for that. Gun advocates point out the violence and chaos after Hurricane Katrina, citizens were left to fend for themselves. With the Tucson Tragedy at the forefront of our minds, more and more people are talking about carrying weapons. Some people criticize Arizona gun laws and the recent shooting near Tucson has further ignited debate over gun laws. Recent debate includes whether or not students should be allowed to carry a weapon on campus.
Whether you are for or against citizens being able to legally conceal and carry weapons, you should read this story about Zamudio, the young man that ran to the chaotic scene of the shooting in Tucson, especially if you do carry a weapon. Running onto a scene where there are gun shots can be very confusing, and it may be difficult to identify who the bad guy is. The attached story includes the different dynamics of this tragedy and how serious split second decisions were made by this young man, with no special training. Understand how these actions can save a life.
Arizona law no longer requires you to obtain a concealed weapons permit, in order to conceal a weapon, however I would still recommend taking the class if you plan to conceal and carry. I have taken the class at Scottsdale Gun Club, and learned a lot about the laws and my rights to carrying a firearm and defending myself in a worst case scenario.
We will always remember the heros and victims of this tragedy. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the victims and their families.

Like so many things, I learned about the three month rule from a client. (Yes, parenting tips are another perk of the job.) One of my clients told me about creating the three month rule when her daughter was a teenager and I think it may be one of the best parenting tips I ever learned. It’s pretty simple: If your teenager has done something and didn’t get caught, they can tell you at the three month point and not be punished. Its sort of like a statute of limitations for teens. It’s important that parents hold up their end of the agreement, or their teenager will never tell them anything again. Let your teenager know that you will still want to discuss the issue with them but no matter what they tell you they will not be punished. This is a great way to open up communication with your teenager and to understand what is going on in their life. It also gives you an opportunity to have a mature conversation about what they are doing, and hopefully influence them in a positive way.
I think that many parents are in denial about their teens and have a ” not my kid” attitude. I remember being a teenager and I can tell you that some of the kids that had really strict parents were the most rebellious. Teens may be tempted to try things, and have regrets after the fact. If they are comfortable talking to their parents, then you can provide them with the tools to avoid a similar situation in the future. I don’t believe as parents we should be our children’s friend, but we should try to not be so intimidating or judgmental that our kids can’t talk to us. Often our kids want to tell us things but are afraid. The teen years are difficult, it’s the time in your life that you try to find your identity and face the pressures of your peers. Teenagers are also dealing with the transition from child to adult. If we want to prepare our children for the adult world, we need to be able to have adult conversations.
Parents should be prepared for anything from skipping class to drugs, alcohol and sex. Remember, you can’t flip out! Listen to what they say, stay calm while you discuss your views and invite them to ask questions. If parents use the three month rule fairly, it can be an amazing parenting tool. Try it, let me know what you think.

Recently I received an advertisement in the mail for a local smoke shop, the add included a coupon for legal bath salts. Obviously, I wondered if there are any bath salts that are illegal, and why would a head shop sell bath salts. The truth is the bath salts are being used as a drug that creates an amphetamine like high and hallucinations. Ivory Wave, Bliss, White Lightning and Hurricane Charlie are all a new type of drug that is being sold as bath salts in many smoke shops. The so called bath salts are being ingested, smoked and snorted to create a dangerous high. The drug has already been linked to several deaths including one young man that plunged 300ft to his death while suffering severe paranoid delusions. The drug is believed to cause severe swelling and irreversible damage in the brain. The bath salts drug can also cause the heart rate to increase to dangerous levels.
[ Read about: Synthetic Marijuana]
It seems as if there is always a new drug popping up, and now these drugs are being marketed as harmless products such as bath salts and herbal incense. I believe that the places that retail these products are very much aware that they are being used as a drug and teenagers are the targeted consumer. I don’t see any argument that they are unaware of their use or dangerous side effects, when it is all over the news and internet. Personally, I am outraged that these shops continue to put these products on the shelves when they know they that they are putting the lives of young people in danger. I would like to see the manufacture and retailers held responsible for the deaths that come from these drugs. Why has there not been a huge class actions lawsuit?
[ Read about: Salvia “The Teen LSD”]
Parents should take time to talk to teenagers about the dangers of using these drugs. I also think it is okay to look through you kids stuff to be sure that they don’t have any thing like this that can hurt them. They may get mad and say you are invading their privacy, but that is better than planning a funeral for your child.
Better the child cry today than the parent cry tomorrow.

Red Friday or Red shirt Friday’s is a campain to show solidarity and support for our troops. Red symbolizes the blood spilled by the brave men and women of the Military and is a reminder of their sacrifice. Red Fridays is not intended as a political statement, just a nice way for Americans to show they support the brave men and women that serve our country. If you were not already aware of Red Friday, now you are. I hope to see everyone wearing red on Friday’s.
George Strait and his band have vowed to wear red on every Friday tour date, they have also asked fans to show their support by wearing red on Friday’s.

Rosacea is primarily a facial vascular disorder in which blood vessels are functionally and structurally abnormal. Currently rosacea can’t be cured, however it can be effectively treated and controlled. Rosacea is a progressive skin disorder, that should be treated when symptoms first begin. Treatment should be aimed at treating the underlying vascular issues associated with rosacea. Vascular Lasers and IPL treatments are extremely effective at treating existing redness and broken blood vessels. In addition to avoiding rosacea triggers, topical products can be used to prevent flushing and further damage that can accelerate the progression of the disorder.
[Rosacea 101: Understanding Rosacea and it's triggers]
Laser and IPL Therapy
Both Laser and IPL therapy are very effective at treating telangiectasia (broken blood vessels), generalized redness and flushing. IPL therapy can also be enhanced with Levulan to get the added benefit of treating acne, rosacea papules and pustuals.
Laser
Lasers that are absorbed well by hemoglobin are used to treat vascular concerns. The laser energy is absorbed by the blood vessel and creates heat within the vessel which damages the vessel wall and permenatly closes that vessel. The treated vessels are then absorbed by the body. Although there isn’t a cure for rosacea, studies show that laser treatment can permantly remove damaged facial blood vessels and with repeated treatment blood vessels will not always be created to replace the old vessel. Facial blood vessels treated with lasers are sometimes replaced with connective tissue. This is good news, because this will permently reduce the number of blood vessels in the face, near to the level of vessels found in healthy skin.
Lasers have a single wavelength that work at a very specific depth. So any idividual laser has it’s limitations. KTP 532 nm and Pulsed Dye: 577 -585nm lasers are well absorbed by hemoglobin and are very effective at treating superfical blood vessels in the face, while Nd:YAG 1064nm lasers are also well absorbed by hemoglobin, they are effective at treating vessels that are located deeper in the skin.
[ Lasers 101: Learn more about aesthetic lasers]
Intese Pulsed Light (IPL)
IPL skin treatments are known by many names including Fotofacial, Photofacial, Photoderm and Photo rejuvenation. Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) differs from lasers because IPL uses a wide spectrum of wavelengths at the same time (for example: 500nm — 1200nm) that can target any chromophore in that range, while lasers have a single wavelength. You can think of the laser like a sniper that can precisely hit a single target with one shot, and IPL is like a grenade that hits several targets at once. IPL uses special cut-off filters that can be selected to target chromophors in a certain range within the skin. When treating rosacea or any vascular concern, the intended target is hemoglobin. The advantage IPL treatments have over laser treatments is that IPL can target vessels at different depths.
[ Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) 101: Learn more about IPL treatments]
Combined Laser and IPL Therapy
Best results are achieved when you combine IPL and Laser treatments. IPL and Laser treatments can be done independently, however combining technologies at the same treatment time will provide a better result. This type of treatment is fairly aggressive and should only be done by someone that is very experienced in combining these technologies.
Oral and Topical Products
Topical Metronidazole Gel
Metronidazole is topical agent used to treat rosacea, available only by prescription. The primary action of Metronidazole is anti-inflamatory. Metronidazole is effective at reducing papules and pustules and has a fairly minimal effect at reducing inflammation. Unfortunately, it isn’t effective for treating broken blood vessels or flushing.
Antibiotics
Antibiotics have long been used to treat rosacea, however they work primarily through their anti-inflammatory properties rather than antibacterial. Antibiotics are effective at reducing papules, pustules, and inflammation. The limitation with antibiotics is that they are not effective at treating telangiectasia or flushing.
Antihistamines
Antihistamines are effective at reducing facial inflammation, swelling and burning associated with rosacea. Histamine contributes to swelling, itching and burning. Histamine has also been shown to play a role in inflammation and redness.
Sunblock with Zinc Oxide
UV rays can penetrate the skin and activate sensory nerves that release potent vasodilators, as well as creating heat in the skin causing facial flushing. Zinc oxide reflects both UVA and UVB rays, blocking out heat from the sun. Topical zinc oxide also has significant healing properties when applied to damaged skin and has been shown to decrease inflammation in both the epidermis and dermis.
Dimethicone
Dimethicone is a silicone based ingredient with moisturizing ability. Dimethicone is also a protective ingredient that has been shown to reduce flushing caused by skin irritants.
Antioxidants
Free radicals have been shown to cause structural damage to vascular walls and many free radicals are potent blood vessel dilators. Dietary and topical antioxidants help to block the damaging effects of free radicals.
Studies show that vitamin C can protect blood vessel walls from free radical damage and reverse existing vascular damage. People with rosacea should get plenty of vitamin-C in their diet, and may want to consider a vitamin-C supplement. In addition to being a great antioxidant, topical vitamin-C has anti-inflammatory qualities.
