The Clarisonic cleansing brush has been a long time favorite among skin care profesionals, so it is no surprise that the Clarisonic Opal is a new favorite. The Clarisonic Opal Sonic Infusion System helps you get the most out of your skin care products and improve the skin around your eyes.
A palm-sized sonic infusion device, the Opal is specially designed to help build skin’s resilience over time and prevent future damage around the eyes. By gently tapping the skin around your eye at 125 sonic movements per second, the Opal dispenses a specially formulated Anti-Aging Sea Serum, maximizing absorption in a way that’s not possible with your finger alone.
A blue dye was added to the eye serum to show the enhanced absorption with the Clarisonic Opal.
For me the biggest selling point is that your products will penetrate better when you use them with the Opal, and when you invest in the best skin care products you want to get all you can from them. The Opal Sonic comes with an Anti-Aging Sea Serum, but I also use it with other serums. I find it also works well with Skin Ceutical’s Hydrating B5 Gel and Obagi Elastiderm Eye Treatment Gel. I think I will also like try it with Skin Medica’s TNS Recovery Complex. I don’t limit my Opal use to around the eyes, I find it works great on the lip line too.

I finally found the time to read ” In Stitches” a memoir of Plastic Surgeon, Anthony Youn, M.D. I am not in the habit of writing book reviews, however I have been looking forward to reading this book since it was released. Dr. Youn is recognized as a top plastic surgeon and has been seen on shows like Rachel Ray and Dr. 90210. His blog “Celebrity Cosmetic Surgery” has been hugely popular, and now he shares his personal journey to becoming a plastic surgeon in his book “In Stitches”. This is a fun, easy read, a perfect book for a relaxing summer day.
In Stitches gives a humorous inside look of the life of Anthony Youn, a boy that grew up feeling like a “nerd” who didn’t fit in, and his journey to becoming a successful Plastic Surgeon. As a teen he was insecure about his over sized jaw and had major plastic surgery to correct it. He hoped that after the surgery he would have better luck with girls, but things don’t always work out as planned. Dr. Youn shares the personal struggles he had talking to women and trying to get a date while in medical school. Honestly, I was beginning to wonder if he was EVER going to get lucky. I actually had to flip back to the photo of Dr. Youn on the inside flap several times, to see if it offered any clues to his dating challenge. I think it all comes down to confidence.
Dr. Youn said he never had an “ah-ha” moment when he instantly knew that he was going to become a plastic surgeon. Maybe he didn’t have an “ah-ha” moment, but I suspect that a night he spent in pediatrics was a major influence. It is often overlooked, that plastic surgery has it’s roots in reconstruction, we are reminded of this when an infant is brought into the emergency room in need of immediate plastic surgery to reconstruct his face.
You will have to read the book to find out exactly what happens. (Warning, this chapter is a tear jerker)
I have spent my career working with doctors, in the field of Medical Aesthetics and Plastic Surgery, so I have some idea how challenging medical school is and plastic surgery happens to be one of the most competitive fields in medicine. Youn was one of 250 qualified candidates competing for a residency in plastic surgery, with only 60 openings. After completing applications for 35 plastic surgery residency programs and 20 general surgery programs (as backups), he receives 15 interview invitations for general surgery and 8 for plastic surgery. Now begins the exhausting process of traveling around the country for residency interviews. These interviews are a bit unusual and a little comical. Finally, Match Day, the day when future doctors are matched with their residency via a process that is compared to E-Harmony.

I know that I am supposed to be the “skin guru”, but occasionally I learn something from my clients. Years ago, one of my clients went to Israel. Before she left, she promised she was going to bring me back a little gift. Yay…I love gifts! ( I am blessed with the most amazing clients.) She returned with AHAVA mineral hand cream. She remembered that I am always looking for something to sooth my dry hands. At work I wear latex gloves and I wash my hands several times a day, as a result my hands become very dry and sensitive. I am glad that I has introduced to this line of products because I absolutely love them.
She told me about the Dead Sea and how people travel from all over the world to float in the Dead Sea and coat their bodies in mud from the Dead Sea. It has long been believed that the Dead Sea offers many health and cosmetic benefits due to the high mineral content of the water and salt.
The Dead Sea is at the lowest elevation on earth and has one of highest concentrations of salt water in the world. The high salinity of 33.7% creates an environment in which animals can’t live, which is why it is known as the Dead Sea. The salt content differs from that of the ocean, which is 97% chloride. The Dead Sea salt contents vary, but it is made up of about: 50.8% magnesium chloride, 30.4% sodium chloride, 14.4% calcium chloride, and 4.4% potassium chloride.
Dead Sea Mud

AHAVA also has a full line of products that are made with Dead Sea Mud. The mineral-rich black mud of the Dead Sea shores is scientifically proven to help soothe and repair dry sensitive skin. In addition to the Mineral Hand Cream I am currently also using the Dermud Intensive Foot cream. It is extreamly hydrating, which is great for dry feet. Better yet, you can buy 100% pure Dead Sea Mud for a full body treatment at home.
Dead Sea Salts

Use 100% Dead Sea Salts at home in your bath tub, or try a salt scrub.
Discover the benefits of the Dead Sea with AHAVA.
Try it and let us know what you think.
You can find AHAVA at Nordstroms, ULTA, Beauty Brands and Beauty First.

It’s been all over the news, I am referring to the Esthetician who gave her eight year old daughter injections of Botox to treat “wrinkles”. She was motivated to do this to help give her daughter an advantage in pageants. As a mother and an Esthetician myself, I wanted to share my thoughts on this crazy story. It has already been said that she is sending the wrong message to her daughter. Lets face it, that message began with putting an eight year old in a beauty pageant.
Why Does An Eight Year Old Want Botox?
There has been discussion about why an eight year old would ask for Botox in the first place. As an Esthetician I can tell you that at that same age my son knew about many of the things we offer in the beauty industry, just from hearing me talk about it. I even remember him telling me that his teacher needed a blue peel, but for the most part he had no interest in esthetic treatments. I am sure that girls would naturally have a little more interest in esthetic and cosmetic treatments than boys, but certainly not anti-aging treatments. Just to state the obvious… children don’t have wrinkles!
Mommy is an Esthetician????
The mother of the little girl is an Esthetician and claims it was her daughter that asked for Botox. As a mother and an Esthetician, I don’t see how that justifies her actually injecting her daughter with Botox. My son once asked me to remove his cow lick with laser hair removal. I obviously refused and explained to him that although it would permanently rid him of his cow-lick, he would be left with a bald spot on the back of his head. He said, he would rather have a bald spot than a cow-lick. I promised him that he would feel differently later, and then changed the discussion to the pain involved. Now that he is a teenager, I know he is glad I didn’t honor his request. My first point is that children don’t know what is best for them, thats why they have parents. My second point is, Estheticians have a professional responsibility, to educate clients about the benefits and risks of a treatment.
The Worst Esthetician Ever!!!
The little girl said she didn’t like wrinkles. Okay… that is fair, I don’t exactly like them either. I am going to be completely hypothetical for a moment, because I am obviously not in the business of treating or consulting children for cosmetic treatments. If I was consulting with this little girl, I would point out that she doesn’t have wrinkles and I would explain to her that children have a lot of collagen and elastin and that their skin cells turn over very fast. I would also explain that the facial muscles only become strong enough to create lines and wrinkles after many years and she could reconsider Botox in about 20 years. I would teach her that the best way to prevent wrinkles is to use a good sunblock every day. Other things she should do, is eat a healthy diet with a lot of fruits and vegetables, drink plenty of water, get enough sleep and exercise and never start smoking. I might even teach her how to properly cleanse her face, but thats about it. It is irresponsible as a skin professional to provide skin treatments that are unnecessary on anyone. I have to assume that either this esthetician doesn’t understand how the skin functions or has poor ethical and professional standards (or both). She is also working outside the scope of an Esthetic License, the only way she can inject Botox is under the direct supervision of a doctor, in which case the doctor can be held responsible for her actions. She stated that she does the injections her self, and purchases the Botox online. FYI- the internet is not a trusted source. After careful consideration, I am awarding this mom with the title of ” Worst Esthetician Ever”.
I am annoyed that this ridiculous story gives a bad reputation to Estheticians and Botox. The truth is there are “bad” Estheticians, which is why it is so important to find an Esthetician that excels in the field. I have to advocate for Botox, by saying that it is only intended for cosmetic use in consenting adults and in children to treat medical conditions, but not for cosmetic purpose. Botox is only sold to approved doctors, the woman in this case claims to have purchased it on line. As I have said many times before, just because you can buy something on the internet doesn’t mean you should.

Imagine a skin treatment that has the ability to treat sun damage, rough skin, freckles, skin discolorations, redness, broken blood vessels, rosacea, acne, kill acne causing bacteria, reduce oil glands, minimize pore size, improve appearance of some acne scars and treat precancerous Actinic Keratose. Believe it or not, such a treatment does exist! The skin treatment I am referring to is PhotoDynamic Therapy (PDT). PhotoDynamic therapy is a non-invasive, non-ablative treatment with little to no down time.
PhotoDynamic Therapy (PDT) is a 2 part skin treatment that uses the light activated drug therapy, Levulan (aminolevulinic acid) also known as ALA. Levulan is a topical agent that is used to photosensitize the skin prior to light based treatments such as IPL (photofacial) and blue light acne treatments.
[ Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) 101: Shining Light On Aesthetic Skin Treatments ]
Adding Levulan (ALA) to a photofacial IPL treatment, is a bit like putting your photofacial on steroids. The Levulan photosensitizes the skin, allowing the IPL energy to be better absorbed by the targeted pigmented and vascular chromophores. This results in a higher level of correction of freckles, sunspots, skin discolorations, broken blood vessels and redness compared to photofacial alone. Although, Levulan in it’s self does not penetrate to dermal layers of the skin, the heat and inflammatory response caused by PhotoDynamic Therapy does reach the Papillary dermis. This heat stimulates the fibroblast to produce collagen.
[ Rosacea: Understanding Treatments and Products for Rosacea Skin]
PhotoDynamic Therapy is unique because Levulan is absorbed by abnormal cells, such as those of Actinic keratosis (AK’s). Aminolevulinic acid is also absorbed into the oil glands and hair follicles. When the Levulan is activated by the appropriate light or laser it damages the oil glands and reduces P. acne bacteria. Acne can be affectively treated by using Levulan to pretreat the skin before IPL (photofacial) or Blue light treatments.

How is the treatment done?
First your skin is pretreated with an acetone scrub, to remove oil from the skin’s surface. Sometimes microdermabrasion is also preformed before the Levulan is applied. Microdermabrasion will remove dead skin cells and cause blood vessels to dilate, which will result in a more effective treatment with IPL. After the skin is prepped the Levulan Kerastick is cracked open and applied to the skin. Aminolevulinic acid (ALA) doesn’t sting or burn like acids used in chemical peels. The ALA is left on the skin to “incubate”. The incubation time can be anywhere from 1-8 hours, a longer incubation time can cause more reaction as well as more correction. Non-facial skin generally requires a longer incubation time. Once the Levulan is applied, you must avoid sun exposure for 40 hours. Topical anesthetic may also be used. After the Levulan has been on for the determined amount of time, the skin is then treated with IPL and/or Blue Light. The light will activate the ALA. Blue Light is used specifically to treat acne and can be done alone or with IPL.
Side Effects
The degree of post treatment reaction will depend on the amount of skin damage and how aggressive the treatment is done. The Luvulan can be left to “incubate” longer, before it is activated for a more aggressive treatment. Those with a lot of sun damage or active acne can expect to have more reaction. Some people will experience little to no side effects. Similar to photofacial, pigmented spots will become temporarily darker, until they flake and peel off. The treated area will likely appear pink or red for the first few days and peeling may also occur and last for up to 7 days. Some may also experience mild swelling that lasts a couple days. It is important to avoid sun exposure for the first 40 hours post treatment, sun block will not protect skin against photosensitivity reactions caused by visible light. Sun exposure can cause stinging, burning, redness and swelling to the treated area.
How many treatments are needed?
The amount of treatments needed will depend on the skin condition and level of correction desired. There is significant improvement with each treatment. Some people may be satisfied with a single a treatment, however for optimal results a series of treatments are recommended. Treatments can be scheduled as soon as 3- 4 weeks apart.
Schedule a consultation to determine if you are a candidate for PhotoDynamic Therapy, and set up a treatment plan.

Whats Trending Now?
Plastic surgery and cosmetic procedures have been a hot topic lately. Why? Because the cosmetic industry is boosting and is predicted to continue to growing as the economy improves. It is expected that Plastic Surgery and non-surgical cosmetic procedures will soon exceed pre-recession levels. The industry peaked in 2004 and saw a big decline in 2009. According to the ASAPS, Plastic Surgery procedures grew by almost 9% in 2010.
I am not sure if the increase in plastic surgery is a sign of an improved economy or not. I will say that I have seen more clients coming in because they want to stay competitive in the work force, especially in industries such as technology, that attract a younger generation of workers. People that are in sales or work with the public feel that their appearance has an impact on their income or ability to obtain a job. I have also seen an increase new clients, that want to improve their appearance before starting a new job. They are taking advantage of the time away from work to recover from surgery.

M∙A∙C Spring Colour 2011 is the feminine force that saves the day! No nemesis can match her super-sized Mineralize Skinfinish, Eye Shadows, Lipsticks and Powder Blush for this transformation!
When my BFF, sent me a photo from her phone of the M.A.C. counter decked out and covered with Wonder Woman products, I was totally elated. Anyone that knows me, should know I am a huge Wonder Woman fan! Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to make it to the M.A.C. cosmetic counter for a couple weeks, and when I finely went to the M.A.C. counter at Paradise Valley Mall, I was disappointed to learn that they had sold out of almost the entire collection. Apparently, this limited edition collection was very popular. The packaging is nostalgic of the Wonder Woman from the comic book series and the cosmetic M. A. C. has even put together a series of Wonder Woman looks: Classic Wonder Woman, Defiance, Golden Lariat, Deep Truth, Mighty Aphrodite and Marine Ultra.
I was so excited and surprised, when my Aunt showed up at my house with the Wonder Woman makeup case and the cosmetic products that they still had left in the collection. I have also been getting text and Facebook messages from my friends about any of the Wonder Woman products they find. If you are looking for the Wonder Woman cosmetic collection, rumor has it that the
M. A. C. counter at the Arizona Biltmore still has some products available. I would like to send out a huge thank you to all my friends and family that have supported my Wonder Woman addiction.
“Please take my hand. I give it to you as a gesture of friendship and love, and of faith freely given. I give you my hand and welcome you into my dream.” Wonder Woman

Melasma (chloasma) is hyperpigmentation or dark, irregular patches commonly found on the upper cheeks, nose, upper lip, and forehead. The patches can develop gradually over time or during pregnancy. Melasma can also develop when taking oral contraceptives or hormone replacement therapy medications. Melasma is thought to be stimulated by hormones, however exactly which hormones are involved has yet to be determined. The most important factor in the development of melasma is sun exposure, and without the strict avoidance of sun exposure, treatments for melasma are likely to be unsuccessful. Melasma can be permanent or disappear and reappear with each pregnancy.
Hyperpigmentation is the term used to describe any type of abnormal dark area of the skin, this includes melasma, freckles and sun spots. When we treat hyperpigmentation in the skin, it is important to understand that the melanocyte is not functioning properly, so it overproduces melanosomes and the excess melanin can not be evenly distributed among the keratinocytys. As the cells rise to the surface of the skin they cause over pigmented or dark spots. When the skin is exfoliated with AHA’s, chemical peels or microdermabrasion, the hyperpigmentation will appear lighter because some of the top layers of skin have been removed and the pigment is less dense (temporarily). The pigment is still there, it is just appears lighter and the melanocyte is still not functioning properlly, so in a few weeks as the top skin layers are replaced the pigment will appear dark again. Tanning will also further stimulate the melanocyte causing darker pigmentation to develop and Melasma will become worse. Hydroquinone works to suppress the melanocyte and is an excellent way to treat the pregnancy mask. For best results Hydroquinone can be used in conjunction with exfoliating treatments. I understand this description may be a little difficult to understand, so if I have lost you, you can come in for a consultation and I will use visual aids to better explain the cause and treatment for hyperpigmentation.
Melasma: My Personal Story
I have Melasma myself, on my upper cheeks and forehead. I first developed Melasma patches on my upper cheeks in my late twenties and later after giving birth to my second child I developed another large patch in the center of my forehead. I have successfully treated my Melasma, but I need to continue to maintain my skin so that it doesn’t come back. As a Medical Esthetician, I obviously have access to the best skin care products and treatments available. I can share both my professional and personal experience with treating Melasma. Using hydroquinone, and broad spectrum sunblock is absolutely necessary for treating and controlling Melasma. Even after successful correction of Melasma, the hyperpigmentation can reappear especially after sun exposure.
My Personal Skin Regimen
Topical Products
My personal skin regimen includes using the Obagi Nu-Derm system, with a 1/2 gram of Clear (4% hydroquinone) AM and PM. Initially I used a 1/2 gram of a .1% tretinoin ( Retin-A) every night, however I am now on a maintenance protocol and only use tretinoin occasionally. I also use a topical vitamin C and a broad spectrum sunblock containing Zinc oxide. I top it off with Jane Iredale mineral makeup SPF 20.
Professional Skin Treatments
I have had an Obagi Blue Peel, and Fraxel treatments. I personally felt I had better results with the Blue Peel. Fractional laser resurfacing and Blue Peels are ideal when treating deep or resistant Melasma.
Although I have corrected my Melasma, I still need to continue to maintain my skin to keep the Melasma under control. In addition to the topical products I previously mentioned, I try to have a light chemical peel every 4-6 weeks. The chemical peel I have found that gives me the best results treating pigmentation, is a custom chemical peel.
Obagi Nu-Derm System
This is correction after using the Obagi Nu-Derm System. This is a prescription strength skin system and is only available at medical skin clinics. Treatment protocols vary depending on skin type and condition.
Obagi Blue Peel
This is an example of deeply pigmented Melasma.
After treatment with Obagi Nu- Derm & Obagi Blue Peel
It is important to precondition with the Obagi Nu-Derm System and Retin-A before having a Blue Peel. I recommend preconditioning for a minimum of 6 weeks or longer depending on how aggressively Tretinoin is used. Patients that are better preconditioned get a better result. It is also necessary to continue to use the creams after peel to prevent Hyperpigmentation & to maintain healthy skin.
Custom Chemical Peel for Melasma
The Custom Chemical Peel I use is a light peel that can be repeated as often as every 4-6 weeks, compared to the Obagi Blue Peel which is a deeper peel necessary for treating deeper pigmentation. I have decided to not include details of my protocol for this custom peel. It is proprietary information that I don’t wish to share with others in the industry. If you would like to learn more, you can schedule a private consultation. I can tell you that with this peel, I will usually get light peeling for 2-3 days. The peeling is minimal and I would not consider there to be any “down-time”, you can still go about your regular routine. You just don’t want to schedule a peel less than a week before any major event like a wedding. I make it a point to work with my clients and their social calendar, so that they look their best for any events.
