What are these little bumps that appear on the skin, and how do you get rid of them?
These little bumps often look similar to a pimple, however they don’t go away on there own and acne treatments are not going to get rid of them. Clients will often ask me to “extract” these little bumps, thinking that they are acne comedones. They are actually Sebaceous Hyperplasia and they can not be extracted, however they can be treated.
What is Sebaceous Hyperplasia?
Sebaceous hyperplasia is a skin disorder of the sebaceous (oil) glands, basically it is an enlarged oil gland. The sebaceous gland can over grow. When the sebaceous gland becomes enlarged it protrudes to the surface of the skin and is visible as a as soft, small papule, that is depressed in the center.
The exact cause is unclear, however it is commonly seen on people with oily skin and there also appears to be a hormonal link. Genetics, sun exposure, aging, and acne are also believed to be a factor in the development of Sebaceous Hyperplasia. Only a doctor can diagnose skin lesions, if you suspect you have a sebaceous hyperplasia it is a good idea to see a dermatologist. Basal cell carcinoma and sebaceous hyperplasia can look similar, so a proper diagnosis is needed.

Treatment For Sebaceous Hyperplasia
It is not medicaly necassary to treat Sebaceous Hyperplasia, however many people choose to remove them for cosmetic reasons. It is important to remember that even after treating the sebaceous hyperplasia, there is a good chance it will grow back. You may want to consider treatments that produce results and are also cost effective, as you will likely need to repeat them at some point in the future.
There are several treatments that can be used to treat or remove sebaceous hyperplasia including: TCA (Trichloroacetic Acid), laser treatments, (PDT) photodynamic therapy with Levulan, cryotherapy, cauterization and electro desiccation with a hyfracator. Using a topical tretinoin (Retin-A), can also be useful, although it will not remove the lesion. Isotretinoin (Accutane) is also used to treat sebaceous hyperplasia. In some cases minor surgery may be recommended to remove the “bumps”.
After removing the lesion, I like to use Levulan, Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) to help control sebaceous hyperplasia, because it shrinks the oil gland.
My preference is to first remove the “bumps” that are on the surface of the skin, and then follow up with products or treatments that are designed to shrink the oil gland, to help prevent it from growing back. If you have several, I recommend to start by treating one first, as a test to see how you respond. There is a possibility of hyper-pigmentation or hypo-pigmentation, those with darker skin are at greater risk for these complications.
If you have Sebaceous Hyperplasia that you would like treated, you can schedule a consultation with an Esthetician at

We are all about having sun kissed skin with out getting sun damage.
I have tried many sunless tanners, and although they have come a long way since the 80′s, many still leave a lot to be desired. I usually look for a sunless tanner that has an instant bronzer and a nice fragrance. A bronze tinted, sunless tanner will give you the satisfaction of instant color and help achieve even application. The chemicals used to create a sunless tan do have an unpleasant odor and can also make skin dry. This is why it is ideal to look for a product that has an added fragrance and a moisturizer. Tantasia is a new self tanner, by Jane Iredale and it meets all of my personal criteria. We (Stephanie & Kristy) both love this product, it works great for people with very fair skin (like Kristy) that need to build up color and those with skin that already has a nice color (like Stephanie) and would just like to add a little extra color and a get a beautiful glow.
A moisturizing, natural bronzer and self-tanner for face and body.
• Bronzer provides instant, healthy-looking color.
• Builds a gradual, natural looking tan within three days, for optimum control and customization.
• Fresh citrus fragrance.
• Streak-free formula.
• Sensitivity tested for use on face and body.
• Provides natural hydration to the skin.
Application for Face:
• Squeeze a dime-sized amount onto your finger.
• Touch the forehead, nose, cheeks, and chin with the finger to distribute product.
• Using sweeping motions, start at the center of the face and blend outwards until you’re pleased with the coverage.
• Wash hands thoroughly.
• Apply daily until a golden tan has been achieved.
Application for Body:
• Squeeze an amount the size of a quarter in the palm of hand.
• Rub hands together two to three times to distribute the product across palms.
• Smooth on one section at a time until product is absorbed using long, back-and-forth strokes.
• Repeat the steps above until the desired coverage is reached.
• Wash hands thoroughly.
• Apply daily until a golden tan has been achieved.
• To minimize the chance of transfer to clothing, allow 15-20 minutes before getting dressed.
• The Blending Brush may be used to blend Tantasia.
• Use frequently to maintain color.

The Clarisonic cleansing brush has been a long time favorite among skin care profesionals, so it is no surprise that the Clarisonic Opal is a new favorite. The Clarisonic Opal Sonic Infusion System helps you get the most out of your skin care products and improve the skin around your eyes.
A palm-sized sonic infusion device, the Opal is specially designed to help build skin’s resilience over time and prevent future damage around the eyes. By gently tapping the skin around your eye at 125 sonic movements per second, the Opal dispenses a specially formulated Anti-Aging Sea Serum, maximizing absorption in a way that’s not possible with your finger alone.
A blue dye was added to the eye serum to show the enhanced absorption with the Clarisonic Opal.
For me the biggest selling point is that your products will penetrate better when you use them with the Opal, and when you invest in the best skin care products you want to get all you can from them. The Opal Sonic comes with an Anti-Aging Sea Serum, but I also use it with other serums. I find it also works well with Skin Ceutical’s Hydrating B5 Gel and Obagi Elastiderm Eye Treatment Gel. I think I will also like try it with Skin Medica’s TNS Recovery Complex. I don’t limit my Opal use to around the eyes, I find it works great on the lip line too.
I finally found the time to read ” In Stitches” a memoir of Plastic Surgeon, Anthony Youn, M.D. I am not in the habit of writing book reviews, however I have been looking forward to reading this book since it was released. Dr. Youn is recognized as a top plastic surgeon and has been seen on shows like Rachel Ray and Dr. 90210. His blog “Celebrity Cosmetic Surgery” has been hugely popular, and now he shares his personal journey to becoming a plastic surgeon in his book “In Stitches”. This is a fun, easy read, a perfect book for a relaxing summer day.
In Stitches gives a humorous inside look of the life of Anthony Youn, a boy that grew up feeling like a “nerd” who didn’t fit in, and his journey to becoming a successful Plastic Surgeon. As a teen he was insecure about his over sized jaw and had major plastic surgery to correct it. He hoped that after the surgery he would have better luck with girls, but things don’t always work out as planned. Dr. Youn shares the personal struggles he had talking to women and trying to get a date while in medical school. Honestly, I was beginning to wonder if he was EVER going to get lucky. I actually had to flip back to the photo of Dr. Youn on the inside flap several times, to see if it offered any clues to his dating challenge. I think it all comes down to confidence.
Dr. Youn said he never had an “ah-ha” moment when he instantly knew that he was going to become a plastic surgeon. Maybe he didn’t have an “ah-ha” moment, but I suspect that a night he spent in pediatrics was a major influence. It is often overlooked, that plastic surgery has it’s roots in reconstruction, we are reminded of this when an infant is brought into the emergency room in need of immediate plastic surgery to reconstruct his face.
You will have to read the book to find out exactly what happens. (Warning, this chapter is a tear jerker)
I have spent my career working with doctors, in the field of Medical Aesthetics and Plastic Surgery, so I have some idea how challenging medical school is and plastic surgery happens to be one of the most competitive fields in medicine. Youn was one of 250 qualified candidates competing for a residency in plastic surgery, with only 60 openings. After completing applications for 35 plastic surgery residency programs and 20 general surgery programs (as backups), he receives 15 interview invitations for general surgery and 8 for plastic surgery. Now begins the exhausting process of traveling around the country for residency interviews. These interviews are a bit unusual and a little comical. Finally, Match Day, the day when future doctors are matched with their residency via a process that is compared to E-Harmony.

I know that I am supposed to be the “skin guru”, but occasionally I learn something from my clients. Years ago, one of my clients went to Israel. Before she left, she promised she was going to bring me back a little gift. Yay…I love gifts! ( I am blessed with the most amazing clients.) She returned with AHAVA mineral hand cream. She remembered that I am always looking for something to sooth my dry hands. At work I wear latex gloves and I wash my hands several times a day, as a result my hands become very dry and sensitive. I am glad that I has introduced to this line of products because I absolutely love them.
She told me about the Dead Sea and how people travel from all over the world to float in the Dead Sea and coat their bodies in mud from the Dead Sea. It has long been believed that the Dead Sea offers many health and cosmetic benefits due to the high mineral content of the water and salt.
The Dead Sea is at the lowest elevation on earth and has one of highest concentrations of salt water in the world. The high salinity of 33.7% creates an environment in which animals can’t live, which is why it is known as the Dead Sea. The salt content differs from that of the ocean, which is 97% chloride. The Dead Sea salt contents vary, but it is made up of about: 50.8% magnesium chloride, 30.4% sodium chloride, 14.4% calcium chloride, and 4.4% potassium chloride.
Dead Sea Mud
AHAVA also has a full line of products that are made with Dead Sea Mud. The mineral-rich black mud of the Dead Sea shores is scientifically proven to help soothe and repair dry sensitive skin. In addition to the Mineral Hand Cream I am currently also using the Dermud Intensive Foot cream. It is extreamly hydrating, which is great for dry feet. Better yet, you can buy 100% pure Dead Sea Mud for a full body treatment at home.

Hollywood A-listers love Oxygen facials, fans include… Fergie, Sienna Miller, Heather Locklear, Donatella Versace, Gwen Stefani, Eva Longoria, Justin Timberlake, Gwyneth Paltrow, Victoria Beckham, Naomi Campbell and Katy Perry. It is even rumored that Madonna is such a fan of the Oxygen treatment that she actually has two machines in her home.
So, what is all the fuss about? Oxygen infused skin treatments instantly leave the skin plump, firm, hydrated and radiant. Oxygen is an excellent nutrient for collagen and elastin, the body uses its own oxygen supply and other nutrients to increase the strength of the collagen and elastin fibers. When used topically, oxygen treatments can reduce the effects of aging by actually nourishing the skin with essential vitamins, minerals, amino acids and enzymes all of which are propelled deep into the skin with pressurized pure oxygen. The result is an instant increase in the suppleness and elasticity of the skin.
What skin types benefit from oxygen treatments?
Nearly all skin types can benefit from an oxygen skin treatment regardless of age, gender or ethnicity. However, because oxygen does stimulate the growth of all cells, oxygen skin treatments are not recommended for cancer patients. Oxygen treatments are especially ideal for smokers and those with acne prone skin and can be used on skin that has been treated with AHA’s, Reitn-A and Acutane.
What to expect with an oxygen skin treatment
A true Oxygen Facial uses actual pure oxygen, compared to other so called “oxygen facials” that use hydrogen peroxide. Although I don’t think there is anything wrong with products that use hydrogen peroxide, it is simply a different treatment all together and can not be compared. I would like to mention that products containing hydrogen peroxide are generally not recommended for darker skin types.
A typical oxygen treatment focuses on exfoliation, hydration, and nourishing the skin, however oxygen treatments can be customized to fit needs of each persons skin. Oxygen treatments can be added to enhance the results of other skin treatments like microdermabrasion, Blue Light acne treatment, energy based skin tightening treatments. Oxygen therapy is also a great post-procedure treatment to help calm and sooth skin and promote healing.
The skin is hydrated using a unique process in which specially formulated enzymes and mineral solutions are used to help draw moisture to the skins surface, thus providing skin cells with more nourishment than ever before possible. Oxygen, in conjunction with vitamins and minerals are propelled onto the skin to nourish and revitalize the skin cells. After the treatment, you will notice a “tight” sensation of the skin, and the skin will look and feel moist to the touch.
Oxygen Acne Treatment
Bacteria thrive in an environment deprived of oxygen, when you introduce oxygen into the skin it acts to eliminate bacteria. Oxygen skin treatments also promote skin healing and reduce inflammation. A professional acne treatment system utilizing pure oxygen, along with proven acne-fighting ingredients work to kill acne causing bacteria, promote healing of acne lesions and calm and sooth inflamed skin.
My family and I had the pleasure of seeing Jordin Sparks live at the MIM Museum in Phoenix, Az. The Jordin Sparks and Friends benefit concert was to celebrate the 1 year anniversary of The MIM (Musical Instrument Museum), and to help Jordin raise money for her exciting new program called the “12/29 Music Project”. The proceeds from this concert will benefit her new program that she is so passionate about.
The 12\29 Music Project’s mission is to provide a safe working environment for young people to perfect their craft through artistry, recording music and learning the necessary skills for working inside a studio while making a difference in their community. 12\29 Music Project is a project of The M.A.D. Girls, Inc. Jordin endorses The M.A.D. Girls Inc, a 501(c)3 non-profit corporation, serves the community as a management group. Jordin Sparks has a phenomenal voice and she is such an inspiration! I’m so excited and thankful that we had a chance to meet her! She is truly a beautiful woman inside and out! Her voice was so mesmerizing and her performance was sensational! We need more positive influences like her that are representing and leading our youth. I am so elated after watching such a personal and intimate concert! Children are our future and we need to make sure that we expose them to positive role models such as Jordin Sparks. I am so enamored by her personality and good will. After speaking with her, I have grown even more fond of her music and her personality, talk about a real girl with a “real” personality! I absolutely love her and her music and her drive. She is so talented and I wish for my daughter to follow her as a role model.
It’s been all over the news, I am referring to the Esthetician who gave her eight year old daughter injections of Botox to treat “wrinkles”. She was motivated to do this to help give her daughter an advantage in pageants. As a mother and an Esthetician myself, I wanted to share my thoughts on this crazy story. It has already been said that she is sending the wrong message to her daughter. Lets face it, that message began with putting an eight year old in a beauty pageant.
Why Does An Eight Year Old Want Botox?
There has been discussion about why an eight year old would ask for Botox in the first place. As an Esthetician I can tell you that at that same age my son knew about many of the things we offer in the beauty industry, just from hearing me talk about it. I even remember him telling me that his teacher needed a blue peel, but for the most part he had no interest in esthetic treatments. I am sure that girls would naturally have a little more interest in esthetic and cosmetic treatments than boys, but certainly not anti-aging treatments. Just to state the obvious… children don’t have wrinkles!
Mommy is an Esthetician????
The mother of the little girl is an Esthetician and claims it was her daughter that asked for Botox. As a mother and an Esthetician, I don’t see how that justifies her actually injecting her daughter with Botox. My son once asked me to remove his cow lick with laser hair removal. I obviously refused and explained to him that although it would permanently rid him of his cow-lick, he would be left with a bald spot on the back of his head. He said, he would rather have a bald spot than a cow-lick. I promised him that he would feel differently later, and then changed the discussion to the pain involved. Now that he is a teenager, I know he is glad I didn’t honor his request. My first point is that children don’t know what is best for them, thats why they have parents. My second point is, Estheticians have a professional responsibility, to educate clients about the benefits and risks of a treatment.
The Worst Esthetician Ever!!!
The little girl said she didn’t like wrinkles. Okay… that is fair, I don’t exactly like them either. I am going to be completely hypothetical for a moment, because I am obviously not in the business of treating or consulting children for cosmetic treatments. If I was consulting with this little girl, I would point out that she doesn’t have wrinkles and I would explain to her that children have a lot of collagen and elastin and that their skin cells turn over very fast. I would also explain that the facial muscles only become strong enough to create lines and wrinkles after many years and she could reconsider Botox in about 20 years. I would teach her that the best way to prevent wrinkles is to use a good sunblock every day. Other things she should do, is eat a healthy diet with a lot of fruits and vegetables, drink plenty of water, get enough sleep and exercise and never start smoking. I might even teach her how to properly cleanse her face, but thats about it. It is irresponsible as a skin professional to provide skin treatments that are unnecessary on anyone. I have to assume that either this esthetician doesn’t understand how the skin functions or has poor ethical and professional standards (or both). She is also working outside the scope of an Esthetic License, the only way she can inject Botox is under the direct supervision of a doctor, in which case the doctor can be held responsible for her actions. She stated that she does the injections her self, and purchases the Botox online. FYI- the internet is not a trusted source. After careful consideration, I am awarding this mom with the title of ” Worst Esthetician Ever”.
I am annoyed that this ridiculous story gives a bad reputation to Estheticians and Botox. The truth is there are “bad” Estheticians, which is why it is so important to find an Esthetician that excels in the field. I have to advocate for Botox, by saying that it is only intended for cosmetic use in consenting adults and in children to treat medical conditions, but not for cosmetic purpose. Botox is only sold to approved doctors, the woman in this case claims to have purchased it on line. As I have said many times before, just because you can buy something on the internet doesn’t mean you should.
Good humor is a tonic for mind and body. It is the best antidote for anxiety and depression. It is a business asset. It attracts and keep friends. It lightens human burdens. It is the direct route to serenity and contentment. – Greenville Kleisser
Best Of Both Worlds Az, recently co-hosted an event to benefit Athletes International, at Stand Up Scottsdale comedy club. We really had a great time and would like to thank everyone that came out to help us support a good cause. For those that didn’t make it, you missed a great show. The show featured Andrew Norelli as the headliner, along with the other comedians that opened the show.
Andrew has been seen on Jimmy Kimmel Live, The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson, Comedy Central’s Live at Gotham, Comedy TV, Entertainment Studios with Byron Allen, and Comics Unleashed to name a few. He is real a top act. Not only is he funny, but he is able to make a crowd laugh out loud without using derogatory terms or offensive language. ( Which, in my opinion is a talent ) Sometime’s you watch a comedian and their style of comedy is only enjoyed by a certain targeted group, however Norelli’s act is tailored to be enjoyed by everyone in the audience. I am guessing his experience with improv has helped him to read a crowd, while working as writer for nationally syndicated television programs has given him an understanding of mainstream humor. Two thumbs up!
Stand Up Scottsdale is known for booking some of the most relevant comedians on the scene, you can expect an amazing headliner every weekend. They also have open mic on Wednesday nights. Stand Up Scottsdale! Comedy Club is located in old town Scottsdale, on 5th Ave between Goldwater and Indian School. It is the old Anderson 5th Estate building. The location is great for anyone that may want to go to dinner in Scottsdale and then a show, or enjoy Scottsdale’ night life at some of Old Town’s Dance Clubs, Bars and Restaurants. You can also enjoy food and drinks at the comedy club before, during or ofter the show, which may be a good idea because the drink prices are more affordable than most of Scottsdale’s trendy hot spots. Most shows are $15. and they offer discounts for military, studants, fire and police.
We really enjoyed working with Howard and everyone at Stand up Scottsdale Comedy Club, we will definitely be back to the club for a good laugh.
