Athletes International is a non-profit organization that focuses on reaching active & retired professional athletes, collegiate athletes, coaches, other athletic affiliates and future athletes. It is their mission to use the extensive platform that athletes are given to influence the community.

“Athletes International is reaching the athletic community with a message of faith, hope & victory!” Larry Kerychuk Founder of AIM

I became aware of Athletes International last summer, after my son worked his way on to the field. My oldest son came home one day and told me he was going to play football at the church, at first I thought that he just put together a game with some friends. I didn’t realize that it was a legitimate league, until I went to watch them play. I found out later that he had been going to the church and watching the team practice, and “asking” the coaches to let him play. He was so board waiting for the fall football season to start that he was dying to get on the field and play. They finally gave him some pads and a jersey and put him on the team. I am grateful they did, because that is how I found out about Athletes International and how they help kid’s through sports. I think it is important to understand that many of these kids would not be able to play organized sports without the help of (AIM) Athletes International. AIM founder Larry Kerychuk and his team take their work beyond the field helping many athletes and their family’s.

[ Benefits Of Youth Sports ]

The Football Camp

In addition to offering organized team sports to kids, they also have a youth football camp in the summer. During the camp these young athletes will have 3 days of training with professional athletes coaching them. The kids will stay 3 nights at the Pointe Hilton, have meals provided and get to have fun at the resort water park. Wait…. it gets better! They also get to attend the Annual Award Banquet with a room full of professional and collage athletes. Some how, they are able to do all this for only $100. per child. Any parent that has sent their child to sports camp or even paid for personal training will tell you that is extremely cheep.

The Cost

There are a lot of costs involved with sports programs. Many youth programs have volunteer coaches, but they still have to pay to have the games officiated and the fields painted. There is also the expense of equipment and uniforms. Athletes International sponsors many of their athletes to participate in organized sports programs and camps, they have never turned a child away. They are only able to cover the cost of these expenses through donations.

Registration Fees: Soccer & Flag Football $65.
Tackle $120 plus $150. per athlete for pads & equipment

27th Annual Awards Banquet:

Athletes International hosts a Celebrity Golf Classic and Annual Athletes Awards Banquet & Auction. They recognize Americas most outstanding Christian athletes. The guests of the banquet not only include collage and profesional athletes, but many of the kids they help are invited to attend as well.
Partners also receive a table for eight at the Annual Awards Banquet, hosted by an Athlete and their spouse.

This years speakers will include:
Aeneas Williams, Cardinals- All Pro

Darrell Green, Washington Redskins – Pro Football Hall of Fame

Brian Jennings, San Francisco 49ers

Bill Mc Cartney, Former Head Football Coach for the University of Colorado

Last summer we attended the 26th Annual Athletes Award Banquet. The Annual Awards Banquet, honors chosen athletes, coaches, and administrators for their professional achievements, as well as their action taken to positively reach their community.

The 2010 award recipients were:
Channing Fry, Phoenix Suns
Adrian Wilson, AZ Cardinals
Mary Ann Miller, Rodeo
Kermit Alexander, SF 49ers
Hillary Bach, ASU Softball
Chris McGaha, ASU Football
M.L. Harris, Bengals

Understanding Free Radicles

What is a free radical?
A free radical is any atom or molecule that is missing an electron from it’s outer shell, making it unstable. Free radicals float around until they stabilize. They stabilize by attacking an other molecule and steeling an electron. There are a wide variety of molecules from which they can steal an electron. The molecule that has been attacked by a free radicle, is now missing an electron and has become another free radical. This creates a chain reaction.
free radicals

Free radicals are a necessary part of life.
Oxidation reactions are necessary part of life, unfortunately they can also be damaging. Our body produces free radicals almost constantly. Free radicals are by-products of a basic metabolic process called oxidation. Immune cells will also release free radicals in order to fight invading viruses and bacteria in, making them an important part of the body’s defenses.

Environmental sources of free radicals
The second source of free radicals is the environment. Free radicals from your environment can be ingested, inhaled or absorbed into the body. Air pollution, tobacco smoke, herbicides, and pesticides all form free radicals. UV rays, from sun exposure are also a cause of free radicals.

Whats the damage?
Damage caused by free radicals include aging, destruction of DNA and clogging of arteries. It is also believed that free radicles may play a role in cancer, strokes, and heart disease. Oxidative stress may also damage or kill cells. Free radicals cause damage to your skin’s structural support and decrease its elasticity, resilience, and suppleness.

Free Radical Theory of aging
The free-radical theory of aging (FRTA) states that organisms age because cells accumulate free radical damage over time. There is evidence that reducing oxidative damage can extend life span. Dr. Denham Harmon, M.D., Ph.D., first proposed a theory of aging in the 1950′s, it is now considered a major theory of aging. Dr. Harmon’s theory also implies that antioxidants will slow the aging process.

Understanding Antioxidants

What is an antioxidant.
Antioxidants stop the chain reactions of free radical, and inhibit other oxidation reactions. An antioxidant is a molecule capable of inhibiting the oxidation of other molecules.
Antioxidants have an extra electron, so they can their extra electron to a free radical. When antioxidants donate an electron to a free radical, they neutralize that free radical.
antioxidant, free radicle

Exogenous and Endogenous
Endogenous antioxidants are made by the body, compared to Exogenous antioxidants which are obtained from our diet. Unfortunately, as we age the body produces less endogenous antioxidants. It is believed that the decrease in endogenous antioxidants leads to premature aging. The body is incapable of producing enough endogenous antioxidants to combat free radicals on their own, so it is essential to get additional antioxidants through diet.

The body makes five types of endogenous antioxidants:
superoxide dismatuse (SOD), alpha lipoic acid (ALA), coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10), catalase and glutathione peroxidase. Catalase and glutathione peroxidase are important, because the body can produce more of them when certain free radicals are present.

ORAC scale
Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity (ORAC) is a method of measuring antioxidant capacities of food. However, because the ORAC method is derived only in test tube experiments it cannot be applied to human biology. Currently there aren’t any food compounds other than, antioxidant vitamins (vitamins A, C and E ) that have been proven with antioxidant efficacy in vivo. Antioxidant from non-nutrient compounds in foods, such as polyphenols, which have high antioxidant capacity in vitro can provide an artificial index of antioxidant strength with the ORAC measurement. Many of these ORAC values remain unconfirmed and are not scientifically credible, and may mislead consumers. The FDA has published guidance disallowing food product labels to claim an antioxidant benefit, when no evidence currently exists. Numerous health food and beverage companies have promoted products claimed to be “high in ORAC”.
ORAC, antioxidants

Is more, better?
Researchers are still learning about the effects of an excessively high intake of antioxidants, some studies are showing that excessive amounts may have negative effects, like inhibiting key enzymes in the body.

You need a variety of antioxidants.
Any molecule that protects your cells against oxidation is technically an antioxidant, but not all antioxidants operate the same way. Antioxidants are not interchangeable, each has a unique set of chemical behaviors and biological properties. Antioxidants work together as part of a network, and no single antioxidant can do the work a group. Some antioxidants may excel at fighting certain types of free radicals, or only work in certain parts of a cell. There are even some that are only effective under the right conditions. Antioxidant diversity is important.

Sources of Antioxidants

All plants produce antioxidants. Even meat, dairy products, and eggs contain some antioxidants, which mainly come from the nutrient-rich plants the animals fed on. Plants and animals maintain complex systems of multiple types of antioxidants, such as glutathione, vitamin C, and vitamin E as well as enzymes such as catalase, superoxide dismutase and various peroxidases.

Antioxidant enzymes made by the body:
superoxide dismutase (SOD)
catalase
glutathione peroxidas
Vitamin-like Antioxidants:
Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) and Glutathione

Vitamin A and Carotenoids
Carrots, squash, broccoli, sweet potatoes, tomatoes, kale, collards, cantaloupe, peaches and apricots (bright-colored fruits and vegetables)
Vitamin C
Citrus fruits like oranges and lime etc, green peppers, broccoli, green leafy vegetables, strawberries and tomatoes
Vitamin E
Nuts & seeds, whole grains, green leafy vegetables, vegetable oil and liver oil

Selenium
Fish, shellfish, red meat, grains, eggs, chicken and garlic

Flavonoids / polyphenols
soy, red wine, purple or Concord grapes, pomegranate, cranberries, tea

Lycopene
Tomato, tomato products, pink grapefruit, watermelon

Lutein
dark green vegetables such as kale, broccoli, kiwi, brussels sprout and spinach

Lignan
flax seed, oatmeal, barley, rye

My Conclusion

My conclusion is simple:
- Eat a healthy diet with a variety of fruits and vegetables.
- Don’t depend on any single “super” antioxidants, a variety of antioxidants are needed.
- Just because you read that red wine, tea or chocolate is high in antioxidants, you don’t want to depend on them as your main source of antioxidants. Remember currently only antioxidants from food compounds with vitamins (vitamins A, C and E ) have been proven with antioxidant efficacy in vivo.
- Avoid environmental factors that produce free radicals.

Isotrex: This drug is NOT FDA APPROVED!

The FDA has sent out warning letters to company’s that are selling Isotretinoin drugs online.

Isotrex is a topical Isotretinoin drug used to treat acne. There are not any topical Isotretinoin drugs that are currently approved in the US. The only form of Isotretinoin that is FDA approved is Oral Isotretinoin (Accutane), and it is very regulated. Isotrex is a category X drug, in comparison to Percocet and Tretinoin ( Retin-A) that are category C drugs. Do not confuse Isotretinoin with Tretinoin, although they are both Vitamin A derivatives, Isotretinoin can have severe side effects and is a category X drug.

About Isotretinoin

I worked for a doctor that prescribed Isotretinoin ( Accutane) and I was the i Pledge designee for the clinic. Every month I had to schedule patients for lab work, doctor’s visits, and register patients with i Pledge. I can tell you it is a lot of work.

Special Prescribing Requirements for Isotretinoin
Because of isotretinoins teratogenicity and to minimize fetal exposure, isotretinoin is approved for marketing only under a special restricted distribution program approved by the Food and Drug Administration. This program is called iPLEDGE™. Isotretinoin must only be prescribed by prescribers who are registered and activated with the iPLEDGE program. Isotretinoin must only be dispensed by a pharmacy registered and activated with iPLEDGE, and must only be dispensed to patients who are registered and meet all the requirements of iPLEDGE.

Isotretinoin is only dispensed one month at a time, so every months patients will need to return to their doctor to have a pregnancy test, and blood work done before you physician can register you for that month. Patients must also go to the i Pledge website and answer a series of questions and reregister every month. After you have met all of the i Pledge requirements you have 7 days from the date on the prescription to get your prescription filled at an approved pharmacy. If you do not fill your prescription within 7 days you are not eligible for another month. You will repeat this entire process every month for up to five months.

Many insurance company’s do not cover Isotretinoin, and the cost ranges from $500 – $900 a month depending on the brand. Patients may also be responsible for covering the costs of monthly lab work and doctor’s fees. You should check with your insurance company to see what they cover.

With all that said:
I believe that Isotretinoin is a good idea for some patients. If someone is suffering from severe or cystic acne and has exhausted all other options, they may want to consider Isotretinoin. There are many acne treatments available, if you are compliant and patient they are very successful. You should discuss options with your doctor.

Brand names for oral Isotretinoin:
Accutane, Claravis, Amnesteem, Stret

Brand names for topical Isotretinoin :
Isotrex, Isotrexin ( not approved in US)

If you suffer from acne, call Paradise Valley Skin Klinic to schedule a free consultation.

Bacne is the slang term for back acne, this condition can be painful and cause scaring. Both men and women get back acne, however it is most severe in teenage boys and athletes. Back acne is sometimes referred to as athletic acne. Tight fitting cloths and athletic gear trap perspiration, allowing P. acne bacteria to proliferate. Steroids can also contribute to acne. Bacne can range from very mild to severe and treatment protocols are designed appropriately. I strongly recommend professional treatment for back acne, as there are acne products that should not be used together or contraindicated for some people.

In-office Treatments

Chemical peels can be customized to treat acne and PIH ( post inflammatory hyperpigmentation) I find that customized peels are a very effective treatment for back acne.

Back facials can include extractions, acne treatment masks, and topical medications.

Microdermabrasion is appropriate for mild to moderate acne, however treating over pustules, cysts and inflamed skin is contraindicated.

Cryotherapy, also called Co2 slush or acne slush, has been used in dermatology for over a quarter of a century. Co2 slush is created at the time of treatment, liquid Co2 is made into a “snow” ball and wrapped in gauze or cheese cloth and then dipped into acetone. The “slush” is the lightly swiped over the treated areas.

Blue Light RF Acne Treatment

The combined energies of elōs™— natural photodynamic therapy (blue spectrum) with radio frequency (RF) — enable highly selective targeting of the sebaceous glands and acne bacteria. Pulsed Light together with RF energies reduce sebaceous gland activity while blue light simultaneously destroys active acne. Blue light treatment isn’t painful and has no down time.

Home Care

You may be prescribed: Oral antibiotics, Topical antibiotics, or Retin-A ( tretinoin).

Clarisonic developed the sonic technology proven to gently yet effectively loosen dirt and oil to clear your pores. The Sonic Skin Cleansing System uses a patented sonic frequency of more than 300 movements per second to clean, soften and smooth your skin. In just 60 seconds a day, the micro-massage action cleans more than twice as effectively as manual cleansing.

I usually recommend that you apply the Bioglycolic scrub, and leave it on for a few minutes before you wash it off. This will allow the glycolic acid time to penetrate.

Resurfacing Body Scrub combines glycolic acid and polished granules in order to provide an aggressive but safe approach for reaching a noticeably improved level of body skin rejuvenation. This formulation enables patients to immediately address roughened or calloused areas while enhancing overall smoothness and tone. Patients will experience unparalleled softness and results will only increase with continued use.

Obagi Clenziderm M.D. is a 3- step physician dispensed acne treatment. Step #1 is a Foaming cleanser with 2% salicylic acid, to remove excess sebum and cleans skin. Step #2 is Pore Therapy with 2% salicylic acid to help unclog pores, and menthol to remove surface bacteria. Step #3 Serum gel is a 5% solubilized benzoyl peroxide to reduce P. acne bacteria.

Kill acne-causing bacteria and bring back beautiful, healthy-looking skin with the easy-to-use ANSR: BEAM. Just two treatments a day can effectively treat and prevent acne blemishes without side effects. Only the ANSR: BEAM has two light treatments in one device:
BLUE light to kill acne-causing bacteria
RED light to smooth texture and tone, reduce redness and pore size

All of the products and services listed are available at Paradise Valley Skin Klinic.
