Perfect Ice Tea

Texas Tea
I call sweet tea “Texas tea”
2 Quarts water
5 standard tea bags, I prefer Lipton
1/2 cup sugar
pinch of Baking Soda (optional)

Bring water to boil, add tea bags and remove from burner. Allow tea bags to steep for 5 minutes. If tea bags are left in longer you will have bitter tea. Add sugar while tea is still hot, this will allow it to completely dissolve. You can add a tiny pinch of baking soda, this will reduce bitterness. Allow to cool before pouring into pitcher. A glass pitcher is best, for pure flavor. I recommend pouring over ice, when tea is served, so that ice will not melt and dilute tea.

Sweeten to taste: Southern tea tends to be a little sweeter so you can add up to a full cup of sugar.

Un-sweetend: If you are like me and prefer your tea unsweetened I recommend using spring water. The sugar in sweet tea covers the taste of minerals that are in tap water.

Garnish: Lemon wedges are great, however so are orange slices, frozen berries and mint leaves.

Sun tea: My favorite, this is the way my grandma makes it. I don’t have the time.
Place pitcher of water with tea bags in sunny area. Allow tea bags to steep in pitcher of water for 3-5 hours. Sweeten while warm.

Green and White Tea: Green and white tea can get bitter fast, so only steep 3 minutes.

Do you have a favorite tea or tea recipe ?

School is back in session but summer is definitely not over. Wearing sunblock every day is just as important in the winter and on cloudy days as it is in the summer and its not just for those planning to be in the sun all day. Those who simply drive to work and work indoors should still apply sunblock everyday. Driving to work is enough sun exposure to activate melanocytes and compromise skin pre and post procedures, such as Fotofacial, Chemical Peels, Laser Hair Removal, Fraxel, and Microlaser Peel. When UVA and UVB light rays enter the skin, they damage the skin cells, causing visible and invisible damage. The cell damage adds up year after year. Built up “invisible” sun damage can lead to skin cancer. The sun breaks down collagen resulting in premature aging, uneven skin tone, freckles, sun spots, and skin cancer. The best way to prevent those unwanted effects from the sun, is to stay out of it, especially between 10am and 4pm, when the suns rays are the strongest.

It is very important to limit sun exposure in childhood, as most of sun damage is done in the first 18 years of life. Start preventing sun damage in childhood now. Block the sun by applying a broad-spectrum UVA and UVB sunscreen lotion with SPF 30 or higher and reapply at least every hour. I prefer chemical-free sunscreens that contain zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, they are more opaque and prevent light from entering the skin. I like the Coppertone Sensitive Skin SPF 50, it has 14% zinc oxide and no fragrance, for the body. I like the Obagi Healthy Skin SPF 35 and Skin Ceuticals Sheer Physical UV Defense SPF 50 for the face. Make sure to apply sun block generously to the skin, and apply 30 minutes before going in the sun. In addition to sunblock, wear sunglasses, protective hats, and protective clothing and stay in the shade as much as possible.

You can find Coopertone Pure and Simple at most drug stores.

You can get Obagi Healthy Skin, SPF 35 and Skin Ceuticals Sheer Physical UV Defense SPF 50 at Paradise Valley Skin Klinic.

With all the excessive heat warnings in Arizona, I felt it was important to remind everyone to watch for signs of dehydration, especially in children.

Dehydration happens when someone loses more fluid than taken in, and the total amount of water in body drops below the level need to function. Severe dehydration requires immediate medical attention. Dehydration can cause swelling in the brain, seizures, kidney failure, coma and death.

Signs of Dehydration

- Thirst
- Dry mouth
- Dark urine, decreased urine
- Fatigue, children that are less active
- No tears when crying
- Muscle weakness
- Headache, feeling dizzy, light headed or confused

Babies can become dehydrated quickly. Dehydration may be more difficult to recognize in babies, because they can not tell you they are thirsty. If a baby doesn’t produce tears they are probably dehydrated. Keep in mind that a dehydrated baby may be to weak to cry. If they have less than 6 wet diapers in 8 hours they may be dehydrated, if they haven’t had any wet diapers in 6 hours they are severely dehydrated and should be taken to the emergency room. Other signs of sever dehydration are sunken eyes, sunken fontanels ( soft spot). Avoid letting your baby get overheated and offer plenty of fluids, especially on a hot day. If you start to notice signs of mild dehydration you can give your baby an electrolyte liquid like Pedialyte. Be sure to discuss dehydration signs and treatments with your pediatrician.

Athletes need to be aware that the water requirements vary depending on the level of activity and environment. Physical activity in hot or humid weather will cause more sweating and water loss. It also takes time to become acclimated to the heat so for athletes starting practice in summer months it can take a few weeks to become acclimated to the heat. Try to avoid vigorous out door activity during the hottest part of the day.

Educate children of the signs and dangers of dehydration. Be sure to drink plenty of water before your thirsty, by the time you are thirsty you are already becoming dehydrated. If you are starting to notice signs of dehydration, rest and get out of the heat. Take in plenty of fluids including water and sports drinks with electrolytes. If symptoms are severe seek immediate medical attention.

Obviously, I am not a doctor so I recommend discussing dehydration signs and treatments with your doctor.

Thanks to Kim Courtney’s Swim School, my daughter is swimming so much better this year. Her confidence in the water has gone way up! Kim Courtney has been teaching children and parents about water safety for 33 years. I highly recommend sending your child or children to her swim school. Its not just for the younger ones who are learning to swim, but also for the older ones who want to perfect their strokes and technique and even join the swim team. Swimming is such a fun activity and great exercise! This swim school is a proud member of the United States Swim School Association.

Re-Opening of the Dorrance Planetarium
Did you know that the AZ Science Center was the first science center in the WORLD to showcase a state-of-the-art NanoSeam dome, and now only one of five in the United States? My husband and I took our daughter the other day and it was AMAZING! We watched 3 of the 6 planetarium shows that they offer. We decided that the best value for us was to become a member. There are different membership levels, so we chose the Basic Plus, which is good for the year for 4, at $85 and $40 additional for the planetarium pass. The only thing we have to pay extra for is if we want to see an IMAX, which we also get a discount for being a member. If you are an educator or have AAA there is an additional discount for membership. The pass also gets you into other museums in Flagstaff, Tucson and others all over the country. The year pass gets you free admission for 4, and only one person who’s name is on the pass has to be with the pass. So, I can invite a different mom and kid each time we go. I have a feeling we will frequent the center often since there is so much to do and see and its indoors to escape the heat! (in fact I could have used a sweater, its quite chilly inside!)
We also ate lunch there and it was very good and the prices were reasonable!
