Athletes International is a non-profit organization that focuses on reaching active & retired professional athletes, collegiate athletes, coaches, other athletic affiliates and future athletes. It is their mission to use the extensive platform that athletes are given to influence the community.

“Athletes International is reaching the athletic community with a message of faith, hope & victory!” Larry Kerychuk Founder of AIM

I became aware of Athletes International last summer, after my son worked his way on to the field. My oldest son came home one day and told me he was going to play football at the church, at first I thought that he just put together a game with some friends. I didn’t realize that it was a legitimate league, until I went to watch them play. I found out later that he had been going to the church and watching the team practice, and “asking” the coaches to let him play. He was so board waiting for the fall football season to start that he was dying to get on the field and play. They finally gave him some pads and a jersey and put him on the team. I am grateful they did, because that is how I found out about Athletes International and how they help kid’s through sports. I think it is important to understand that many of these kids would not be able to play organized sports without the help of (AIM) Athletes International. AIM founder Larry Kerychuk and his team take their work beyond the field helping many athletes and their family’s.

[ Benefits Of Youth Sports ]

The Football Camp

In addition to offering organized team sports to kids, they also have a youth football camp in the summer. During the camp these young athletes will have 3 days of training with professional athletes coaching them. The kids will stay 3 nights at the Pointe Hilton, have meals provided and get to have fun at the resort water park. Wait…. it gets better! They also get to attend the Annual Award Banquet with a room full of professional and collage athletes. Some how, they are able to do all this for only $100. per child. Any parent that has sent their child to sports camp or even paid for personal training will tell you that is extremely cheep.

The Cost

There are a lot of costs involved with sports programs. Many youth programs have volunteer coaches, but they still have to pay to have the games officiated and the fields painted. There is also the expense of equipment and uniforms. Athletes International sponsors many of their athletes to participate in organized sports programs and camps, they have never turned a child away. They are only able to cover the cost of these expenses through donations.

Registration Fees: Soccer & Flag Football $65.
Tackle $120 plus $150. per athlete for pads & equipment

27th Annual Awards Banquet:

Athletes International hosts a Celebrity Golf Classic and Annual Athletes Awards Banquet & Auction. They recognize Americas most outstanding Christian athletes. The guests of the banquet not only include collage and profesional athletes, but many of the kids they help are invited to attend as well.
Partners also receive a table for eight at the Annual Awards Banquet, hosted by an Athlete and their spouse.

This years speakers will include:
Aeneas Williams, Cardinals- All Pro

Darrell Green, Washington Redskins – Pro Football Hall of Fame

Brian Jennings, San Francisco 49ers

Bill Mc Cartney, Former Head Football Coach for the University of Colorado

Last summer we attended the 26th Annual Athletes Award Banquet. The Annual Awards Banquet, honors chosen athletes, coaches, and administrators for their professional achievements, as well as their action taken to positively reach their community.

The 2010 award recipients were:
Channing Fry, Phoenix Suns

As a parent of an athlete I have seen first hand the benefits and positive effects of youth sports. The benefit of participating in sports, goes beyond the obvious physical and health benefits. Sports can help kids develop character, social skills, self discipline, confidence and even improve academic achievements. If kids are activaly involved in sports, they are less likely to develop delinquent behavior. As a community we should recognize the social and economic consequences for students that don’t have the opportunity to be involved in sports or other after school activities. Children and teens who are unsupervised after school are more likely to use alcohol, drugs and tobacco, engage in criminal and other high-risk behaviors.

Dumb Jock?

When we think of athletes, many people have an image of the “dumb jock”, but we are beginning to learn that stereo type couldn’t be further from the truth. In-fact student athletes often do better in school and on standardized testing. Students that participate in sports also have a lower drop out rate.

It is believed that physical activity has a positive effect on learning. Studies show that sports and physical activity in general improve concentration, memory and a students classroom behavior. After engaging in structured physical activity, young children have improved mental focus, concentration and attitude toward school. Studies have show that aerobic activity increase blood flow to the brain improving memory. It is also suggested that aerobic exercise promotes brain cell growth and regeneration.

A survey of 75 Fortune 500 companies showed that 95% of corporate executives at or above a vice-president level had participated in high school sports.

Mood, Attitude and Character

Participating in sports reduces anxiety and depression and improves self-esteem. Sports promote social interaction, friendship, self discipline, leadership, teamwork, cooperation, trust, respect and improve coping skills. Participating in sports has also been shown to reduce anxiety and depression and improves self-esteem.

Aerobic activity releases endorphins, which relax us and reduce depression. In addition to increasing endorphins, exercise in general can raise levels of glucose, serotonin, epinephrine, and dopamine which can help balance behavior.

My experience raising an athlete

We introduced our kids to sports at a young age with fun, unstructured play and family activities. My little guy isn’t old enough for organized sports yet, but my teenage son has been playing organized sports since he was five. We let him experiment with several sports, so he could learn what he excelled at and enjoyed the most. He has done karate, baseball, soccer, hockey, basketball, golf, track, skateboarding and football. We always let him choose what activities he wanted to do, but once he started, he had to finish the season. Some sports he liked more than others, and some he is admittingly better at than others.

One of the biggest things I noticed is how sports help social development. When my son was about nine, he invited both, kids from school and kids from his football team to his birthday party. I couldn’t help but notice that the kids that played sports, interacted with new people more easily. I am not referring only to the kids from his football team, but also his friends from school that played other sports. The athletes were more social and confidant, while the kids that didn’t play sports were timid about interacting with new kids. I could look around and see most of the kids playing together, while a few had segregated them self from the group and needed encouragement to participate.

A few years later my son switched schools twice in a year, to meet his academic needs. He began the school year at a public school. When I picked him up from school the first day, he told me he had friends at this school, that he already knew from sports teams he played with. A couple weeks later, he was switched to a private school. Before he started at the new private school, we were invited to a pool party, to meet some of the other boys in his grade. I was impressed with how quickly my son transitioned into the group. We were only there a few minutes, before he was playing football with the other boys. I honestly feel that playing sports has given him a social advantage, and now that he is in high school sports is an academic motivator. Anyone with a teenager will probably agree, they need all the motivation they can get. Lets not forget that teenagers are also exposed to things like drugs and alcohol, and although some athletes may participate in these things, a serious athlete is more likely to avoid them because they are conditioning their bodies to be competitive.

Shadow Mountain has been an underdog in high school football for the past five years, with only 12 wins in five seasons. Shadow Mountain’s football program was in need of a complete change, so Mike Giovando was hired as the new head coach. Coach Giovando has 17 years of both High School and College coaching experience. He is currently a quarterback instructor both locally and nationally and trains close to 60 quarterbacks. As an offensive coordinator, he’s helped guide teams like Carl Hayden, Saguaro, and Desert Mountain to play offs. Giovando’s successes as an offensive coordinator is undisputed, and now is his opportunity to prove his ability as a head coach.

The offense is new, the defense is new, nothing is the same.

Giovando isn’t the only new coach at Shadow Mountain, in-fact the program has all new football coaches, and all have won at every program they have been at. This new coaching staff not only brings experience, they are building confidence in their players.

The players are physically stronger, and believe things will be different from a mental standpoint. The biggest change you will see with the Matadors, is a new attitude and thought process. These athletes are not involved in football, they are committed.

In the past Shadow Mountain had many athletes transfer to schools with a winning football program. Parents and players want to go where they can win and be successful. Giovando’s connection to youth football leagues and his reputation training quartebacks, will likely bring a lot of exposure to Shadow Mountain. The new football program has already attracted athletes to Shadow Mountain.
