What is Copper Tripeptide-1
Copper Tripeptide-1 is naturally occurring in the body, it is composed of the amino acids Glycyl-histidyl-lysine, which spontaneously binds to copper, also known as GHK-CU. Copper Tripeptide-1 has many benefits within the human body, however levels decrease with age. Given the benefits that it has for renewing, repairing and protecting the skin, it makes sense that this would be used in cosmeceutical skin care products.
Anti-Aging
Copper Tripeptide-1 is used topically for anti-aging and firming of the skin. As we age our skin becomes progressively thinner, this is due in part to the declining production of collagen in the dermis and keratinocytes in the epidermis. As we age the skins ability to protect and repair itself also declines and this contributes to the degradation or breakdown of collagen. Copper Tripeptide-1 plays a role in stimulating collagen production and in the proliferation of keratinocytes. This is very promising for anti-aging skin care
Wound Healing and Tissue Remodeling
Copper Tripeptide-1 is seen to play a role in accelerating wound healing and improved tissue remodeling. Studies done on diabetic wounds, showed that wounds healed up to three times faster and had a lower incidence of infection, in the presence of Copper Tripeptide-1. This is relevant to anti-aging, because as we age the levels of GHK-CU decrease, which can affect the ability for skin to repair and renew it’s self. Further more, many of the treatments used to improve skin appearance, take advantage of the skins wound healing ability to increase the production of collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid. The more effective the skins wound healing ability is, the more effective the treatment may be.
Anti-Tumor and Protective Ability
Radiation from sun exposure and cancer treatments have damaging effects on DNA and induce aging. Copper Tri-petide-1 (GHK-CU) helps to protect DNA from these damaging effects. Tumor cell lines died in the presence of Copper Tri-peptide, however healthy cell lines were protected. Skin fibroblasts, are “master cells” responsible for producing collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid. Fibroblast exposed to radiation have been shown to restore their function when in the presence of (GHK-CU).
Antioxidant, Anti-Inflammatory and Anti-Microbial Effects
Intrinsic antioxidants, are antioxidants that the body makes, they can not be obtained with diet. With age, the production of these intrinsic antioxidants declines. Some of these intrinsic antioxidants are induced by Copper Tripeptide-1. It also has anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial effects during wound healing and tissue remodeling stages.

IS Clinical is one of my favorite skin care lines and that is saying a lot. Anybody who knows me will tell you that I am a very hard sale. It takes a lot to impress me. I am not interested in perfumes, fancy packaging or gimicks. There are so many skin care products on the market, making a wise choice can be a challenge even for skin profesionals. It seems like every week there is another represenative from some skin care company trying to get us to sell their products. Although most of these products are not bad, I only want the best for my clients. When IS Clinical first came out, their rep came to the office I was working in at the time and I almost sent her away. Luckily, she caught my attention with Active Serum. An amazing serum that is packed full of high quality active ingrediants. Active Serum is one of my favorite skin products of all time, and every one else loves it too. This summer I started using White Lightning from IS Clinical and I LOVE IT! IS Clinical has several great products, but I want to share our top five favorites.
Active Serum
Active Serum is defiantly a must have! This product is appropriate for most skin types and can be incorporated into just about any skin care program. Active serum is perfect for treating acne, hyper pigmentation and anti-aging. The ingredients are designed to exfoliate the skin with out any dryness or peeling. If you don’t have this, GET IT!
Ingredients: Sugar Cane Extract (a source of Glycolic Acid), Bilberry Extract (a source of Lactic Acid), Willow Bark Extract (a source of Salicylic Acid), Arbutin, Mushroom Extract (a source of Kojic Acid), Menthol.
White Lightening
This formula is designed with lightening agents that work to reduce hyper pigmentation and brighten skin. They also added powerful antioxidant and moisturizers. White Lightening also comes in a serum that contains exfoliating agents. There are many people that have embraced their freckles and love them, while others would prefer spotless skin.
Freckles are clusters of concentrated melanin, ranging in color from red, tan and brown. Some people have a genetic tendency to develop freckles, however sun exposure is the main cause of freckles. Freckles generally appear on sun-exposed areas, and will appear darker or more prominent after sun exposure. Ephelides is a freckle which is flat, light brown or red, and fades when protected from UV light. Ephelides are more common in those with light complexions. Liver spots (also known as sun spots and Lentigines) are freckles that develop after years of sun exposure, and are more prominent with age.
If You Want To Remove Freckles
The best way to remove freckles is to have a series of photofacial treatments, combined with bleaching creams containing 4% hydroquinone and tretinoin (Retin-A). A good UVA/UVB sunblock is also recommended, because UV exposure will make freckles more prominent.
Photafacial (Fotofacial) uses IPL (Intense Pulse Light) to treat skin discoloration, redness and broken capillaries. There generally isn’t any down time associated with IPL treatments, however pigmented spots will appear darker temporarily. After a photofacial any freckles or pigmented lesions will darken up and flake off. It can take up to two weeks for spots to flake off. The number of treatments needed will vary depending on the skin condition.

If You Like Your Freckles
If you are not concerned with removing freckles you can use lightening and brightening products. These products brighten the skin without removing freckles. Freckles will fade slightly, but will not go away.
OBAGI C-RX System
If you love your freckles, you may want to skip the Therapy Night Cream from this system. The Therapy Night cream has a 4% hydroquinone, which will further fade freckles and pigmentation. The Clarifying Serum also has a 4% hydroquinone, however this C- serum is only used in the morning and is not enough to eliminate freckles. The Clarifying Serum is great for anyone that wants brighten their skin tone, and still keep their freckles.
iS Clinical White Lightening Complex
Brightens and lightens skin with beneficial moisturizing properties. Utilizing an innovative blend of proprietary lightening ingredients and pharmaceutical-grade botanicals, this high performance formula exfoliates, reduces inflammation, and provides strong antioxidant protection.
White Lightening Complex will brighten the skin, and freckles will fade, but not go away completely.
Prevent Freckles
To prevent freckles, you need to use a good sunblock. I recommend a UVA/ UVB sunblock with an SPF 30 or higher. I also recommend sunblocks with Zinc, because it is a broad band physical block. SPF only measure UVB protection, and even if a product is labeled to have UVA protection, it may not protect from the full UVA spectrum. Topical Vitamin C ( L- ascorbic acid) can also help prevent sun damage because it neutralizes UV radiation.

Active Serum is in the top 5 of my favorite skin products, and I have tried a lot of products!
I’m not alone, all of the Estheticians I know love it and I can’t remember ever having a client say they didn’t like it.
I will sometimes incorperate Active Serum into my Obagi Protocol by mixing it with Exfoderm, or put it directly on my skin before tretinoin ( Retin-A). If I am not using Retin-A, I use Active Serum AM and PM before other creams.
Originally designed as an anti- acne formula, this product contains a combination of ingredients that target other concerns such as aging and pigmentation. Active Serum is appropriate for most skin types and can be incorporated into other skin regimens. Although is Clinical Active serum contains active exfoliates it will not cause skin peeling.
Active serum is applied in the evening after cleansing, and before any creams. Active Serum is contraindicated after chemical peels and many laser treatments, it may also cause irritation when used with some acne products. Be sure to consult with your Esthetician before using this product.
